Musculoskeletal Ultrasound is the most rapidly developing field with in Ultrasound right now.  It also happens to be
under development in the accreditation process and has absolutely no certification program in the United States.
Any certificate offered in the USA for Diagnostic Musculoskeletal Ultrasound is not valid outside of the walls that
assigned it.
But do not take this statement to mean the training is not necessary and steps should not be taken to document
training time and efforts.  One should work to master the modality to achieve accurate results and avoid any false
positives and false negatives.
Simply showing up to Ultrasound Courses and gaining CME's will not be enough to excel in this challenging and
rewarding field.  Ultrasound is the only imaging method in which th diagnostic quality of the images is determined
by the person holding the probe.  There are no parameters with templates and guides to follow throughout the
exam, the angle of the beam, depth, frequency, slice thickness, frame rate, probe selection, and efficiency of the
exam depends on the Sonographer.
Creating an accurate, efficient and over all clean exam can be determined by the quality of training one receives.
The quality of training will then determine how much of the Practitioner's time is lost daily, as well as how much
patient care is increased by the fine tuning of a diagnosis with Diagnostic Musculoskeletal Ultrasound.
No matter where you choose to have your training, emphasis should lye heavily on the following:
  • HANDS ON (approximately 75% of the training time should be hands on)
  • Ultrasound physics
  • Knobology
  • Sonographic appearance of tissues
  • Sonographic appearance of artifacts
  • Anatomical planes of each tendon and muscle (not body plane)
  • MSK related sonographic landmarks
  • limitations of MSK Ultrasound
  • Interventional procedures
Also take into consideration that one training session is not enough to be proficient in Musculoskeletal
Ultrasound.  Training sessions should be followed up with monthly courses or review of
training DVD's that involve
live scanning demonstrations.
Sample Ankle Slide: Easy to interpret
format makes the learning process
much easier.
Sample Shoulder Slide: Correlation
with anatomical and other radiology
references also aid in the learning
process.
